2023 Symposium

Wellness through an Inclusive Lens

Join us for our third annual virtual LICSPA Symposium on May 12, 2023, from 10 a.m. –12 p.m. EST.

A Multi-Faceted Approach to Wellness for our Students and Staff Populations

After an ever-changing time in higher education, professional staff and students face a challenge that is not new, but that has become more prevalent in all aspects of our lives: taking care of ourselves. Oftentimes, wellness can be a looked over topic by both students and staff/faculty, the result being harm to themselves and those around them. This symposium serves to re-emphasize the importance of all aspects and areas of wellness. With the assistance of our panelists who all have one or more aspects of wellness within their realm, we desire to answer the question: How do we, as professionals, promote and facilitate proper wellness strategies in both ours and students’ lives? And further, how do we do this in an equitable way?

Join our panelists and specialists as they address this topic at our virtual LICSPA Symposium on Friday, May 12, 2023, 10–12:00 p.m.

  • Alicia K. Czachowsku, EdD, MPH, CHES (they/them/theirs), Senior Executive Director of Alice! Health Promotion, Columbia Health

  • Adele Gutierrez, BDN, RN, Registered Nurse: EAP Coordinator at SUNY Old Westbury

Our meeting will begin with a presentation and discussion led by Christine Fishlinger, Financial Aid Counselor; Deseree Wiltshire, Director of Student Access; and Michael Cavalli, Assistant Dean for Campus Life, all from Five Towns College.

Topic: Seeing the Whole Student: Addressing Needs from Humanist Perspective

In the world of art, there are images known as mosaics: photographs made up of many smaller individual photos. Often, when presented with issues or challenges, we try to sum them up with one root cause or solution, rather than recognizing the many smaller issues or challenges at the root of the problem.

As our campuses have responded to the ongoing ebb and flow of the pandemic and social inequity, our students have experienced unprecedented struggles regarding their mental health, housing/financial stability, relationship dynamics, professional trajectories, and each dynamic of their well-being. Higher education professionals stand at the forefront of responding to these challenges faced by the emerging adults that comprise our student communities. Within fully remote, hybrid, and even traditional in-person modalities, practitioners have adapted new approaches to supporting students through these challenges. There are key strategies that can be considered and applied towards better addressing students’ needs.

The Future of Serving Students in Higher Education

The COVID pandemic has forever changed the way higher education professionals serve students. Our incoming students spent their formative years in high school learning behind a screen. They missed out on traditional milestones such as proms, sporting events and for some even graduation. Because of the unpredictability at the time some students were not even required to take standardized tests such as the SAT and ACT. In addition, these students were witnesses of political turmoil and learned the power of their own voices when it comes to matters of social justice. Now in college, many students have grown accustomed to a virtual way of living, but as institutions we are trying to return to what we once believed to be ‘normal;’ reviving our in-person campus events, offering classes in person and providing students with the ‘traditional’ college experience. How do we work to assimilate this new generation of students whose lives have greatly changed and been shaped by the COVID pandemic? What role will technology grow to play in learning both inside and outside the classroom and how do we teach students to voice their opinions on matters of social justice in an appropriate and effective manner?

Join our panelists and specialists as they address this topic at our virtualLICSPASymposium on Friday, April 29, 2022, 10–12:00 p.m.

  • Deysi Aguilar-Mpoy, Assistant Dean of the NOAH Program, Hofstra University

  • Denise Dawkins, Administrative Assistant in the Division of Business Management, Internship Coordinator to PHIT – Public Health Informatics and Technology, Dominican College and 2nd Year Doctoral Student, Manhattanville College

  • Elizabeth Greenlee, Coordinator of Residence Life, St. Joseph’s College
